A novel of the struggle for power between the Hun, Attila, ""the Scourge of God"", who sought dominance of the then known world (5th century) and Aetius, dictator of Rome. And of a second struggle in a plateau kingdom, threatened by Attila's conquest, where two families -- the Roymarcks and the Ildeburghs, are leaders; and of a third family, in the person of the grasping Ranno, who had taken over the Ildeburghs' holdings for himself- when Nicolan of the Ildeburghs and his mother were sold into Roman slavery. How Nicolan made his comeback; how his love for the golden-haired daughter of the Roymarcks proved a guiding star in his life; how the great horses of the plateau prove a factor in the plot development -- all add up to a story of perhaps more pace and gusto than some of Costain's historical panoramas. A way of life- in meticulous detail- provides a colorful setting. Good entertainment -- and pleasantly informative.
