Vera Caspary writes emotive entertainments, part romance, part suspense, about women destined to kill or doomed to die. Usually they are beautiful, with chiffon to champagne touches. This one tells about Elaine, twenty years younger than the attractive male animal she has married. But shortly thereafter Fletcher has a laryngectomy which destroys his powers to communicate with her in other areas. He keeps a diary with lying, damning entries; he also has a calculating daughter and son-in-law anxious to get his money-- away from Elaine; and when he dies (suffocation) there is no question about one's sympathies-- they have been carefully stacked... A trumpery which is also something of a trompe l'ceil, easily read, certainly by women.
