Still another picture book nostalgically evoking an idyllic farm where Grandpa still lives. The first-time author's quiet, poetic text blends harmoniously with the artist's carefully rendered paintings, leading toward dark and sleep as the reiterated ""Night is coming"" becomes ""Is coming"" and, finally, ""Is,"" with the moon shining over the darkened land. Henterly lovingly extends the meaning, depicting Grandpa rocking a child to sleep as the sun sinks. The animals, from an almost tactile herd of Jerseys to the many wild creatures, are beautifully observed, and other scenes (e.g., a pumpkin-shaped sun sinking over a field of pumpkins) are postcard perfect, though there are occasional clumsy passages (an artificial-looking field of windrowed hay). Attractive of its kind.
