THEY CAME LIKE SWALLOWS

This book was reported on January 1st -- postponed -- now reannounced for this date as co-choice with title below for May Book-of-the-Month. In spite of its relative slightness, it is a book that stays by one in pleasant memory, and deserves the recognition it is receiving. In contrast to Maxwell's first novel, the eccentric and artificial Bright Center of Heaven, this is a quiet and moving story of a middle western family, with two very genuine small children. Little external action -- the story is more poignant through its complete naturalness and skillful portraiture. The light and sensitive touch, a deft use of contrast to bring out the tragedy in the situation of little people, make it thoroughly worthwhile.
