A vade mecum for college and university teachers who wish to beat the system while appearing to stroke it. The anonymous author prefaces his advice by describing its inspirations-- Microcosmographia Academica: Being a Guide for the Young Academic Politician published in 1908 in England for the benefit of Englishmen. This is addressed in the Victorian avuncular to the ""dear young and inexperienced academic,"" who is given tested advice on why he must eschew all opportunities to state a definite opinion in faculty meetings, in conversation, in book reviews or in irate correspondence with book reviewers. ""Cultivate no cleverness, and utter no laconisms and don't ever allow your platitudes to sound like epigrams, but rather let your epigrams sound like platitudes."" Glow-coated with epicene malice, it's a sure bet as a small gift to tuck under academic gowns.
