CAMOUFLAGE

Youngsters are encouraged to look for camouflaged animals in this lift-the-flap book from the American Museum of Natural History.

On each double-page spread, the two-sentence text on the left explains a bit about the critter hidden in the full-bleed photo on the right. The text concludes by asking readers, “Can you see it?” Readers can then open a gatefold flap to reveal the featured creature, now clearly visible against a white background, along with some additional facts about it. Creatures presented include the common baron caterpillar, the walking stick (insect), the octopus, the tawny frogmouth (bird), the zebra, and the polar bear. A final double-page spread reveals where the creatures were hiding in the initial photos and introduces readers to James Carpenter, a scientist from the AMNH. Toddlers will enjoy the hide-and-seek aspect of the project, but even though the concepts are simply explained, they will likely go over little heads.

Here’s hoping big kids will not be put off by the format, since they are the appropriate audience for the content.
