As in Skye O'Malley (1980), Small dutifully slogs away at providing plot fillers between bedroom frolics--but this time there's a somewhat more energetic narrative, since the randy heroine must be transported from 1811 Long Island to England, Russia, Istanbul, and back to England and America. Miranda Dunham, once the unwilling bride of cousin Jared Dunham, is now zonging like a zither in connubial transport with him as they slip away from their Long Island estate--to bring dimpled sister Amanda to England for marriage with nice Lord Adrian (in spite of the 1812 conflict heating up). The Dunhams, you see, are English: Jared's a lord in the old country and runs secret errands for Lord Palmerston (who exclaims, ""By God, Yankee, I like you!""); and they settle easily into London, where Miranda bears a son. But then Jared is off to Russia for a talk with the Tsar, so while Jared is gone, his good brother John assumes his identity. (Never mind why: it's a chance to get him into the sack with Miranda for a chaste coupling.) And when impatient Miranda travels to Russia to find Jared, she finds instead Jared's hateful former mistress Gillian and the evil Prince Cherkessky--who strangles Gillian at the peak of perverse passion, dresses the body in Miranda's clothes, and ships Miranda off to his slave farm. . . where she's expected to breed with good-hearted prize stud Lucas. (Miranda has his child--who will die.) Plus: sex in Istanbul with kindly Mirsa Khan in his happy harem; return to England; a kidnapping; and several deaths. Like Skye O'Malley: very soft-porn twaddle--but a bus-depot special.
