The blood-soaked Tower of London claims still another victim.
The Hon. Daisy Dalrymple, married to Scotland Yard DCI Alec Fletcher and recovering from the birth of twins, visits some old friends living in the Tower of London in hope of picking up information for an American magazine article. A pleasant reunion, some new friends, a tour of the Tower by a Yeoman Warder and a visit to the Crown Jewels give Daisy a good start, and an invitation to stay overnight to see the ancient Ceremony of the Keys is icing on the cake. On the night of the ceremony, a real pea-souper adds to the air of mystery. As Daisy heads home early the next morning, she discovers the body of the Chief Warder with a pike buried in his back. DCI Fletcher and his murder team are given the job of solving the sensitive murder case. Even though he warns Daisy off, Alec benefits from the knowledge she gained on her visits to the Tower. It seems the murdered man may have been mistaken for another Warder who had a sideline in blackmail. Since his potential victims range from humble soldiers to Yeoman Warders to the Governor of the Tower, it’s no easy task to discover who did the deed.
Another fan-pleaser in Dunn’s long-running period series (Gunpowder Plot, 2006, etc.).
