The third installment in Douglas’s original Midnight Louie quartet (The Cat and the Queen of Hearts, 1999, etc.), first published in paperback abridgment in 1990, allies the sleuthing alley cat with Johnny Diamond, a Las Vegas crooner that a stalker has singing the blues, and Jill O’Rourke, a sharpshooting poker player supporting a cantankerous grandfather, Eightball O’Rourke, who still dreams along with his cronies of a score even bigger than his granddaughter’s heart.
