Major Dirk Pitt, sent to investigate a ship the Coast Guard has discovered embedded in a North Atlantic iceberg, finds a mysterious hole bored through the ice to the ship itself. The wildly improbable action then moves to Iceland where a multinational superconspiracy called Hermit Limited is trying to save the world via a takeover of Haiti and the Dominican Republic as stepping stones to the capture of South America. The scheme is directed in part by a vastly wealthy transsexual who has an ocean probe for mining rare minerals from the bottom. The sex-changer pretends to be his/her own twin sister. Dirk Pitt, like you-know-who, is a deathproof intelligence officer, an epicure, and one-up on every subject. The story is ridiculous and the confrontation displays the naked transsexual steaming for Pitt. Styleless stuff, for all the derivative bravura.
