Third of a series begun with Time of Hope and The Light and the Dark in which the young barrister, now moved out of his poor environment into a Cambridge college, is involved in the question of an election to a post. The death of a master is imminent. Crawford is the scholar, Jago the go-getter -- the post will go to one or the other. Lewis Eliot, our young narrator, and his friends, support Jago, as the two factions manoeuver for support and votes, and try to keep from the dying man all knowledge of what is going on Many of the scenes take place in the faculty combination sitting and conference room, and there's a faithful portrayal of English college life, of which the parts are better than the whole. While not wholly enmeshed in the earlier books, familiarity with them would enhance appreciation of this, which taken alone seems at times slow moving, the emphasis on character and background rather than advancing the plot.
