In a quiet, ruminative text nicely amplified in Pinkney's luminous, sun-dappled watercolors, a white family exploring the woods comes across evidence (daffodils, a stone foundation, a marble, a horseshoe) of a long-gone house, The former inhabitants (black) are then shown as they might have been on an ordinary summer evening. A pleasant exercise in imaginative nostalgia.
