From the ominous black funnel cloud on the cover, to the harrowing eyewitness accounts and the many slam-bang color photographs of the damage caused by tornadoes, this title grabs the attention of readers fascinated by natural disasters. The three-column newspaper format with bold inch-high headlines and orange text boxes adds to the hype, screaming “Tri-State Terror” and “Take Cover!” and stating, “About 1000 tornadoes zap the United States every year. . . . ” Included too, are small boxes with experiments for the reader to try to better understand the science concepts of weather, for example creating a tornado-like vortex with two plastic soda bottles. The author concludes with a glossary and index. Kids who devour this Disaster title will enjoy Hurricane! (2002) and Earthquake! (not reviewed), also in the series. (Nonfiction. 8-12)
