In the inimitable Ipcar fashion, this teaches the young reader that long ago the ancestors of his very own pets ran wild in the forests. It also takes him on a tour of the mountains, deserts and jungles where the llama, camel and elephant — animals he knows from the zoo and circus — are trained to work for man. Despite the superb illustrations in dramatic hues of rust and gold, the book is uneven as a whole. The second half offers considerably more information than the repetitive text in the beginning.
