A collection of eight stories, one of which is virtually a short novel and six of which appeared in England under the title, The Apple Tree. With dependable craftsmanship, this popular novelist diverts her story telling gift to the short story form, and uses- in the six stories I saw- her eerie sense of impending doom, her facility for creating suspense, to make them all good reading, despite an unpalatable end impression. Monie Verita blends a bit of Lost Horizon with The White Tower and has its share of mysticism; the title story offers a surprise ending to a "brief encounter"; The convincingly creates a horror tale of the onslaught of the birds on humanity; The Little Photographer, portrays a society woman at loose ends- and her victim who took her moments of passion too seriously. These for sampling a collection that carries a name value.
