In this fifth installment of Myers’ series, rancor simmers between vicious hate groups and a secret army that protects affluent people of color.

Donald Alexander, Kwame Mills, and Samantha Rivers are three successful friendswho make up the “Black Camelots” in New York City. They, along with various politicians and celebrities, have long been targets of white supremacist organizations that deem them the “most prominent people of color.” Luckily, the Black Camelots belong to the covert Guiding Force, which has a private army called the Society of Protectors. As some Protectors crave revenge for one of their own who was killed during a white supremacist attack, a hate manifesto circulates among racist groups that will likely spark further violence. This looming hostility affects myriad individuals in NYC, including Republican senator Digby Yates, who’s running for president, and his probable opponent, Democratic senator (and GF member) Janet Bivens. Digby is a reputed racist, just the type of evil figure the Guiding Force wants to take out, but doing so would surely set off the race war many have been fighting to avoid. Fans of Myers’ ongoing series will enjoy another outing with characters and subplots to spare. These include Donald possibly running for either mayor or vice president; a bar owner avenging his savagely beaten friend; and Digby’s wife’s sexual attraction to Black field hand Tyrone Wheeler. There’s a bevy of memorable characters, from glaringly villainous bigots to those who do questionable things for the apparent greater good. Struggling to prevent potential assassinations and unspeakable retaliations, they’re all immersed in an unrelenting tension that carries the story through to the final act and a smashing climax.

An indelible cast headlines this taut, nerve-racking tale.
