DOG POEMS

Crawley and Petrosino team up again for a sequel to their previous collaboration, Cat Poems (2005). Some of the 24 rhyming poems in this volume describe different breeds and characteristic canine behavior such as tail-wagging, hogging the bed or sloppy dog kisses. Others look at adopting a puppy or a rescued greyhound or coping with an older dog. Several poems focus on the relationship between humans and dogs, including an interesting look at the dog’s evolution from a wolf at the campfire of prehistoric man to a pampered dog in front of the fireplace. The poems are written in a casual, humorous style that children will enjoy, though adults may find them rather sing-song in their rhythm. Though they are generally lighthearted in nature, a few address poignant topics: the loyalty of dogs compared to humans and looking back over the long life of a beloved pet in the final poem. The cartoon-style illustrations done in pen-and-ink and watercolor provide additional comic touches and show dog owners of varying ethnicities. (Poetry. 7-10)
