Some rather perverse points of provocation in the story of a mill town, Jonesville, kept in ignorance and under the vindictive surveillance of Ivor Jones who uses his minister, the fanatic, obsessive Reverend Foxx to further his purpose. With the killing of a man in Bull Woods, where the superstition of an ""evil thing"" which rubbed its horns on a madrone tree has been perpetuated, the law is forced to choose between worldly or other-wordly forces at play. With the help of Bleeker Twist, who has both psychiatric and hypnotic powers, the case is brought back to human terms and a human culprit. A rather clever combination of superstition and fetish as it surrounds criminal impulse and investigation, this is nonetheless for special tastes. And a double sale in the mystery market.
