I WANT A DOG

May wants a dog, but her parents say not yet. May is reasonable, but very persistent; when logic fails, she gives her mother a puppy (""Nice try, but not now,"" says Mom). So May sets out to prove that she really would take unfailing care of a dog: she puts a roller skate on a leash and takes it everywhere, not neglecting its airing in even the least clement weather. Her friends begin by teasing but end by making pet roller-skates a fad; her parents are impressed, but not to be hurried. It's still ""a couple of years"" before May will finally get a dog. The author of Tales of a Gambling Grandma has another no-nonsense, offbeat story here, and, again, her illustrations are distinguished by their unique style, with bold areas of vibrantly juxtaposed color, a strong geometric element, entertaining detail, and unusual energy. An excellent read-aloud, this tribute to undaunted independence might be even better for independent reading.
