I'm always a bit startled when I happen upon an unfamilar E. Nesbit. This one is new territory to me — I am sure I never read it as a child. It has her infallible touch in the combination of realism and fantasy — of real children and fairy folk. But somehow, the reality becomes a bit clouded — the dialogue is less sure — the fairy tale pattern more usual. Not up to her best.
