The titular question encourages readers to lift flaps in search of the sweetie pie in question. Is he or she “[i]n this chair?” On the flap is a chair seen from behind; readers will pretty easily see that “[i]t’s a teddy bear!” even before they lift the flap—“But where’s my sweetie pie?” Not behind the log with the frog, or in the house with the tiny mouse, alas. But...in this pocket, that contains a locket? With two successive lifts, readers reveal a foil mirror: “There you are! / Hello, sweetie pie!” Emberley’s graphics are bright, simple and pleasing, and the text’s combination of repetition and rhyme is just right. Unfortunately, the flaps, while easy for clumsy little fingers to manipulate, are also on the flimsy side—chances are good they’ll wear out all too soon. (Board book. 1-3)
