George, a free lance writer, with no money and not many prospects, is in love with Giulia, the only daughter of second generation Italians who have high hopes for her. She has been a scholarship student through college and now may win a fellowship to Rome. These are the minutes of their last weekend together at her family's in Bayfield; of George's attempt to secure the endorsement of her parents and win the liking of her kid brother Mike; of their announcement that they want to get married- and her mother's vociferous opposition, her father's quiet approval; of the time they can spend alone, making love- the anodyne as George questions himself and his future. They decide suddenly to elope- just as suddenly come back, to the letter announcing that Giulia will have her year abroad.... Perhaps just as perishable as the experience it records, but the touch is fresh and true.
