NIGHT AND THE CITY

A story of the London Underworld- night life of the city at its most degraded- with Marry Fabian, pander, boaster, and small-time crook, as the central figure. He poses as a song writer, a big shot back in New York -- he keeps on the ragged edge by feeling some of the people most of the time -- and he lives on his ""take"" from gee, and free various forms of blackmail, and from promoting ""projects"" of which he quickly tares. Much of the action takes place in a dive where bums and drunks are hi-jacket for they have on them and then booted out. And there's a thread of romance in the story of Adam, who wanted to be a sculpter when he'd put enough aside to step being a waiter at the disc- and Aelon, could get something better. A story told is successive shots- vivid, authorities and almost unrelievedly unpleasant but convincing realism.
