An excellent translation, attractively set in generously large format with outstanding illustrations. In exquisitely structured watercolors that make imaginative use of details (rows of toy soldiers or the paper dancer and her reflection to create rhythmic patterns), Lynch renders the one-legged toy's poignant journey with intelligence and restraint. Though the snaggled- toothed jack-in-the-box and the giant sewer rat are pleasingly fearsome, and daring points of view are used to fine dramatic effect, Lynch's art is always at the story's service, celebrating its poetic vision without usurping its power. Very nice indeed. (Picture book. 5+)
