Can someone teach Baby Rooster his wake-up call? The newly hatched rooster, adorably depicted with rosy cheeks, round polka-dot body and bright crest, knows it’s his job to wake everybody up, but doesn’t know what to say. He asks the pigs and the cows and the ducks, who each add their own sound to “Cock-a-Doodle.” “Cock-a-Doodle-Quack-Quack,” etc. And the cat doesn’t respond at all. But the wise owl tells him to go to the gate and listen very carefully. Baby Rooster is puzzled, but follows this advice. Eventually, a sound comes from the neighboring farm, and Baby Rooster listens intently. His first couple of tries are a failure—“Cock-a-Doodle-Noo”?—but the third, correct attempt wakes everybody up. Of course, Baby Rooster promptly falls asleep. The authors structure the story for maximum giggles, and Busby’s bold acrylics add energy and humor. (Picture book. 3-6)
