BUTTERFLY

Another for the now established Cain market, — the familiar, foreordained formula of a love which is largely lust, and the retribution it carries. This time the setting for characteristic Cain-raising is West Virginia, where mountaineers shine, shoot and shivaree their kinfolk — and the central character is Jess Tyler. Jess and been deserted by his wife, Belle, some years back, when she ran away with Moke Blue. Their daughter, Kady, now 19, comes to live with him, bringing the first reminder of her in many years. Mady brings out impulses and instincts he's ashamed of until he see the butterfly birthmark on Kady's child and learns that Kady is child of Moke, the man he hated, and not his child. Jess breaks up Wash's plans to marry Kady, and gives way to the attraction she holds for him. When arrested for incest, he clears himself with the court, but not with Kady, who leaves him to the crude justice of the posse.... A sordid tale of compulsive prohibitive passion. Certainly not for conservatives.
