Millie the calf wants to play, but it’s very early in the morning. She has to wait for the “rise-and-shine sound,” but no one else is up. She hears a “Baaaa!” That’s not the rise-and-shine sound; it’s Lamb! Then there’s an “Oink. Snuffle. Oink. Oink!” Nope, that’s Pig! Through a course of animal noises she goes, until she hears rooster’s call. Millie can’t hold in her “Moooooooo!” of excitement calling everyone to play. As she did in Millie in the Meadow, Pedersen’s knock-kneed naïf explores her farm environment, once again identifying her friends by sound instead of sight. Pedersen’s watercolor-and-crayon illustrations are as sweet and expressive as Millie’s outing. Toddlers will be glad to play along. (Picture book. 2-6)
