Eighteen-year-old Alexia, the only half-Anglo, half-Latina girl in her school, is a doppelgänger for singing superstar Kari Kingsley. After a classmate posts Alexia’s picture on the Internet with the intent of making fun of her, she is contacted by Kari’s management with a business proposal. In exchange for more than enough money to pay for college and signing a nondisclosure agreement, Alexia leaves her mother and abuela, moves to Hollywood and poses as Kari in public while Kari works on her new album. In Hollywood, Alexia is determined to find her father, a famous singer who doesn’t know she exists. She also falls for teen heartthrob Grant Delray, who thinks she’s Kari. There’s plenty of tangled-web–weaving and looks at the not-so-glamorous lifestyles of the rich and famous. Alexia’s book smarts don’t always help her in her fast-paced job, especially when she tries to help Kari with her gambling addiction, but her devotion to her family and Grant will win the hearts of romantics everywhere. Good, clean, “Pop Star and the Pauper” fun. (Fiction. 12 & up)
