OUTSIDER IN AMSTERDAM

Practicing Zen Buddhist/Amsterdam policeman van de Wetering has written a novel combining his knowledge of both disciplines, and it starts off at the head of its procedural class. A member of a strange sect, a Hindist, makes his final detachment when he's found dangling at the end of a rope. Officer Grijpstra, dour in his dicta (""Dirt is like crime, the supply is endless"") and his lighter-hearted associate De Gier investigate the dead man's less empyrean pursuits in hooked bodies as well as souls. Originally conceived and exceptionally well-written with lots of cross-cultural exotica to inform the trip.
