I, ADAM

Though born a whaler's son, Adam Crane did not feel the call of the salt. While other boys in the Connecticut shore town waited to go to sea, Adam thought of an inland future, steering a plow. A well established author, Mrs. Fritz has here created several realistic, intriguing characters: the bitter school master, Richard Sharkey, Mulie and Enoch, Adam himself and Pen Jackson, to name some. It is Adam's story and the author focuses on him, but it is also indirectly Tyler Sharkey's story, Captain Crane's tale, and the combined stories of the minor characters. Writing most often from Adam's point of view, Mrs. Fritz shows convincingly how Adam changes and grows a little from his struggle on the farm. The world of brine and foam and the hot green land of sweet, harvested hay are carved out in detail to form strong backgrounds for a clearly plotted, well written adventure story.
