STORIES ON STONE

A surprisingly dull investigation of the art inscribed and painted on rocks in the southwestern US. Dewey (Wildlife Rescue, 1994, etc.) tells of her encounters with Anasazi rock art from a very early age, provides background about the ancient inhabitants of the region, and suggests some answers to the mysteries surrounding them. Muted illustrations (sans captions) appear randomly alongside text and consist largely of reproductions of petroglyphs and pictographs. The book looks subdued and has an offhand tone; information on an intrinsically intriguing topic is so flatly offered that only those already interested in the material will see its fascinations here.
