SHE DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE

A delightful, light-hearted whodunit with a touch of romance.

When Kate Valentine, author of the bestselling Loretta Starling mystery series, decides to attend the wedding of her editor (and ex-fiance), her sleuthing skills are put to the test.

Kate knows that attending her ex-fiance Spencer’s wedding is probably a bad idea, but when she finds out that he’ll be marrying Kennedy Hempstead, of the wealthy Hempstead family, she can’t resist the temptation, especially since the invitation came from the infamous Rebecca Hempstead, Kennedy’s aunt, known as the “Bitch Bull of Wall Street.” Things become infinitely more complicated—and sexy, due to some convenient forced proximity—when Kate discovers that her longtime crush, Jake Hawkins, a former professional surfer, has been mistakenly invited as her plus-one, and that Spencer might be harboring feelings for her even after their disastrous break-up. When Rebecca suddenly changes the Hempstead family’s inheritance plans, throwing the celebration into utter chaos, and the bride-to-be is poisoned in a way strangely reminiscent of one of Kate’s novels, Kate finds herself turning to her fictional detective to help solve the mystery and clear her name. Kate’s vivid imagination and reliance on Loretta Starling means that the plot bounces between the events surrounding the wedding and excerpts from Kate’s novels. While this is a clever device, it has a tendency to muddy the tale rather than clear things up, especially since the author juggles a large and unruly cast of characters. But while this sometimes falls short as a detective novel, it works as a second-chance romance, and the combination of the two in this adult debut make it a charming and highly entertaining addition to both genres.

A delightful, light-hearted whodunit with a touch of romance.

HOW TO SOLVE YOUR OWN MURDER

Breezy, entertaining characters and a cheeky premise fall prey to too much explanation and an unlikely climax.

An aspiring mystery writer sets out to solve her great-aunt’s murder and inherit an estate.

Twenty-five-year-old Annie Adams has never met her great-aunt Frances, who prefers her small village to busy London. But when a mysterious letter arrives instructing Annie to come to Castle Knoll in Dorset to meet Frances and discuss her role as sole beneficiary of her great-aunt’s estate, Annie can’t resist. Unfortunately, she arrives to find Frances’ worst fears have come true: The elderly woman—who’s been haunted for decades by a fortuneteller’s prediction that this will happen—has been murdered, and her will dictates that she will leave her entire estate to Annie, but only if Annie solves her killing. It’s a cheeky if not exactly believable premise, especially since the local police don’t seem terribly opposed to it. Annie herself is an engaging presence, if a little too blind to the fact that she could be on the killer’s to-do list. Her roll call of suspects is pleasingly long, including but not limited to the local vicar, a one-time paramour of her great-aunt’s; a gardener who grows a lot more than flowers; shady developers and suspicious friends from Frances’ past; and Saxon, Annie’s crafty rival, who inherits the estate himself if he manages to solve the case first. Annie pieces together clues through readings of Frances’ journal, but the story eventually runs aground on the twin rocks of too much explanation and a flimsy climax. Cute dialogue gives way to lengthy exposition, and by the time Frances’ killer is revealed you may well be ready to leave Annie, Dorset, and Castle Knoll behind for the firmer ground of reality. Fans of cozy mysteries are likely to be more forgiving, but if you cast a skeptical eye toward amateur sleuths, this novel won’t change your mind about them.

Breezy, entertaining characters and a cheeky premise fall prey to too much explanation and an unlikely climax.

DEEP END

A surprisingly sensual sports romance.

A collegiate diver and swimmer secretly pursue kink together, and risk falling in love along the way.

Scarlett Vandermeer is struggling. Despite a successful recovery from the injury that almost ended her Stanford diving career, she hasn’t been able to get her head together, and it’s affecting her performance. Plus, she’s trying to stay focused on getting into medical school. A relationship would be out of the question. By comparison, Lukas Blomqvist is a swimming idol, a record-breaker who wins medals as easily as breathing, and Scarlett has long been convinced he would never look in her direction—until one fateful night when a mutual friend lets slip that they have something unexpected in common: Scarlett likes to be submissive in the bedroom, while Lukas prefers to take a dominant approach. Now, they both know a big secret about each other, and it’s something neither of them can stop thinking about. It’s Lukas who suggests they have a fling—purely physical, just to take the edge off, so Scarlett can get out of her own head and stop overthinking her dives. Initially, their arrangement is easy to stick to, but the more time they spend together, the more Scarlett starts to realize that what she feels for Lukas is more than physical attraction. Complicating the situation is the fact that Scarlett’s friend Penelope Ross used to go out with Lukas, and the longer Scarlett keeps mum about her true feelings for him, the more difficult it is to keep the situation hidden from another person she really cares about. While Scarlett and Lukas’ relationship does begin as a physical one, their deeper psychological connection takes a little too long to emerge amid all the other storylines, resulting in a somewhat rushed resolution. However, Hazelwood’s latest is proof of the depth and maturity that has emerged in her writing over the years, and it highlights her embrace of sexier, more emotional elements than were present in her original STEMinist rom-coms.

A surprisingly sensual sports romance.
