MARTHA MATILDA O'TOOLE

Martha Matilda O'Toole/ Went skipping off to school. . ./ But as she turned to go through the gate/ Discovered that she had forgotten her slate."" She starts again, and one by one remembers (in rhyme) to retrieve her book, pen and shoes, but it's not until then that a goggle-eyed boy tells her what any kid will have noticed first thing--""Martha Matilda's forgotten her dress!"" MM finally arrives, fully clad and equipped, only to discover it's Sunday. That she decides to wait until Monday is a rather disappointing resolution, and the pastel pencil and wash drawings lack the verve of her strong absentmindedness. Kids may already know Martha Matilda from the Playhouse record but even they should appreciate the barefaced humor.
