Gardner's second shot at continuing Ian Fleming's James Bond series is smooth enough—but a good deal less fun than License Renewed. Somebody has been hijacking jumbo-jets carrying billions in bullion. Who? Well, it seems to be Bond's old, supposedly dead nemesis Blofeld, who has revived SPECTRE and is out to capture America's Particle Beam Weapon. So Bond, disguised as an art dealer, zeroes in on paranoid Texas millionaire Marcus Bismaquer, suspected head of SPECTRE. And Bond's partner now is Cedar Leiter, daughter of old FBI pal Felix. Foiling Bismaquer's agents in Manhattan and Washington, Bond and Cedar drive in his turbo-powered super-car to Texas and get themselves invited in; Bismaquer's divinely beautiful wife Nena falls for Bond; there's a big car-duel between Bond and racing-star Walter Luxor; Bond is drugged, turned into a brainwashed American four-star general, and sent into NORAD headquarters in Colorado to get the particle-beam plans. But where is super-villain Blofeld? Is he really still alive? Or are the Blofeld name and evil being carried on by a Blofeld daughter. . . perhaps someone very close (bedroom-close) to Bond Comic-strippy as ever, but without the freshness and Bond-persona detail of the first resurrection.
