Author of Appointment in Semarra in a collection of short stories, sketches for the most part that have appeared in The New Yorker. Intangible, touching on the fringe of reality, good characterization, photographic eye for human idiocyncrasies, the Hemingway touch in dialogue. The man has undoubted ability for getting human nature down on paper, and these short stories do not lean on the questionable assets which the conservatives resented in the novel.
