MY BIG RIG

In a merry head trip, London takes a young trucker on a transcontinental voyage in a big rig. It’s never much of a stretch for little boys like this one to imagine they’ve become the men behind the wheels of the trucks they are playing with. Garofoli brings verve to the proceedings—the art is high on color and contrast, sinuous and arresting; scouring the illustrations for details is half the fun even though the style looks simple and clean. London narrates in a chugging haiku: “My big rig rolls through the city . . . across a bridge . . . and out into the country.” The music of the road pulls the lad onward (readers can sort of track the journey from west to east across the United States). “My big rig rolls across a valley . . . up a mountain . . . through a tunnel . . . and down the other side. ZOOM!” He also gets to stuff down some donuts and talk out the side of his mouth into the CB to fellow truckers. Life is good. The big rig is even better. (Picture book. 3-6)
