This comprehensive examination of the republic of Israel with a discussion of the problems that face it lacks the dynamic drive of the Weismann or Koestler treatment, but is outstanding as a complete ""textbook"" for the general public. Beginning with the historical background for the establishment of the present state of Israel, covering the long years of Jewish migration from the destruction of Judea through the horrors of 1939-45, Dr. Dunner treats in detail the struggles of Jewish leaders and the Jewish people to establish the state against diplomatic pressure of all sorts and actual military attack. The author then explains the political, ideological and geographical nature of Israel, its internal and international policies and organizations. There is also a discussion of the Arab and Russian problems. Dr. Dunner, the head of the Zionist Organization in the Iowa area, is naturally concerned with the controversial issue of the loyalties of American Jews, and suggests a dual loyalty based on the similar democratic concepts of America and Israel. Appendix with the Mandate for Palestine and the text of the draft Constitution. There is some controversial material in regard to the relation of Christianity to anti-Semitism, but this on the whole should be of general interest.
