New reader Sophie is enchanted by the bedtime story hour at the library, but can't help thinking little Sammy would have enjoyed it too; unfortunately, Sammy's love of books is still expressed by ripping, throwing, and stepping on them, so their mother didn't let him go. Still, the ``library sleepover'' inspires Sophie to offer Sammy a program of his own: she arranges a ``book bed,'' invites him to bring his favorite stuffed toy, and regales him with books and scary stories by flashlight (``Mommy wouldn't let me use a candle''). It's a huge success- -Sammy is a ready convert, and Sophie has found a career: librarian. Caseley pictures her wholesome, believable tale in cheerfully bright colors; her figures are appealingly expressive, including a charming young librarian in a granny nightgown and bunny slippers. An inspiring bedtime story, for home or library. (Picture book. 4-8)
