Leigh’s debut picture book tells a story of first social interactions.
After waking from days of hibernation, Brudders, a bear, attempts to befriend other woodland animals, but his overeager approach is poorly received. For example, his splashing in a body of water scares off fish, and he’s stung after poking his head in a beehive. He wonders, “Why does it seem that nobody likes me?” On a sailboat trip, Brudders encounters white bird Zeke, who says he was “sent from above.” Zeke explains that animals have varying temperaments and that “it’s important to understand them, and your friendship will grow.” Brudders tries a gentler, more respectful approach, and other critters respond positively. For example, instead of peering into the beehive, Brudders says, “Hello buzzing bees! That’s a cool hive you’ve got.” Pleased with his positive experiences, the bear heads home and discovers “all the animals from the woods” at his door: “We came to bring you dinner. You’re our new favorite friend.” Readers will root for Brudders, a sweet, well-intentioned protagonist, in his friendship quest. It’s a relatable tale that emphasizes an important lesson, as Leigh thoughtfully reminds youngsters that appropriate, considerate gestures are imperative. Roberts’ endearing illustrations use soft, pleasant tones and delightful, detailed backdrops. Spreads depict friendly animals, woodland scenes, and animal-shaped clouds in gradient pastel skies.
A charmingly illustrated, heartwarming story of animal friendship.
