A stand-out early board book uses striking, Roy Lichtenstein–inspired graphics to introduce a gallery of child-pleasing and very noisy machines. Each spread presents one conveyance, heavy black lines delineating the forms clearly. A backhoe appears poised and silent on the left page; it “SCOOPs” out a bucketful of mud (and a turtle) on the right. The onomatopoeic sound effects are the only text, and they appear in big, balloon letters as part of the illustrations, drawing the readers’ eyes. Part of the Sounds Funny! series.
