Liang’s picture book follows a child as they learn about themself and the world.

A fair-skinned toddler experiencing the world for the first time addresses the grownups in their life, trying to find the piece of information that will unlock their identity; this is represented as a huge golden egg with a locked door. (“There are times when I like to ask why, / As I am trying to find the right key, the one that’s mine.”) As the child grows older, they hold onto their companion egg and their individuality, despite hearing constant messages to conform. The child beseeches older and larger people to be patient and meet them at their level, both physically and emotionally—they just want to be seen as a valid human being and have their passions encouraged. The text is written in verse; at times, this produces sentences that are potentially tricky to understand for new readers because of the ways the words are arranged to fit the rhyme scheme. The illustrations by Khmelevska are beautifully drawn in a whimsical style perfect for a lush fairy garden setting. The color palette features light, springy tones with golden, twinkly accents to add an extra bit of fantasy, complementing the main character’s naturally blue hair.

A very young child’s touching exploration of manners, respect, and empathy.
