A family of elephants and their monkey friend find something called a Wully-Wully and adopt it as a pet. Then at a picnic the Wully-Wully is stolen away by a rhinoceros king and when one of the little elephants goes to the rhino city to rescue it he is caught and put in jail, and must be rescued in turn by the monkey. Surely no one but a de Brunhoff could get away with such a plot, but no doubt de Brunhoff will—not only for old acquaintance's sake but, too, for the surprises when it seems all has been resolved: first the rhinos thunder through Celesteville and recapture the Wully-Wully, and then as both sides prepare for war there's a more redeeming switch with little Flora elephant visiting the rhino king and persuading him to set the disputed Wully-Wully free to go where he wishes.
