THE EVER-LIVING TREE

A single California redwood spans 2500 years, from 325 B.C. until it's felled by lightning in 1869. Meanwhile, the author and illustrator attempt to convey the concurrent sweep of human history—building the great Wall of China, the birth of Jesus, the rise of the African Kingdom of Kanem—noting that ``the little redwood tree grew and grew.'' Unfortunately, even with the help of the rudimentary timeline provided, the information is so disparate that readers who lack a firm sense of past chronology will be left mystified by much of it. Canyon uses warm brown, green, and gold for handsome center panels showing the tree's growth, while dramatic borders illustrate contemporaneous human events—e.g., the tree as a sapling in the forest framed by Alexander the Great conquering Greece. An interesting idea, but less than successful in execution. (Nonfiction. 10-12)
