Even two turkeys may prove too many in this lighthearted tale. Orphan turkey Buford becomes a vital asset to the family garden when his droppings create a special fertilizer, but soon a group of pesky poultry attempts to join the yard. Farmer Fred tries a variety of tactics to deter the unwelcome visitors but to no avail. Even blasting music and a whirlwind car ride prove fruitless, until neighbors gather the burdensome birds in exchange for the coveted fertilizer recipe and their own feathered garden helper. While abrupt transitions initially distract from the flow, the plot gains momentum as Fred cajoles the rafter of turkeys. A gentle surprise provides a humorous conclusion. Lloyd’s soft watercolors suit the cozy, cheerful cottages; wavering lines emphasize the flock’s mayhem even as their endearing expressions steal each scene. Pictures extend beyond thin borders to depict the impending chaos, and a dynamic wordless double-page spread successfully utilizes cool colors to startling effect. Overall, this rural romp provides a gobbling good read. (Picture book. 5-8)
