SHADOWS IN BRONZE

Not two weeks (in A.D. 71) after wrapping up his first case (Silver Pigs, 1989), raffish imperial Roman informer Marcus Didius Falco is back stamping out the embers of another conspiracy against the Emperor Vespasian, who sends him to the usual far reaches of the Empire to persuade the defeated conspirators to come back to his told by warning them that their scurvy underling Barnabas has turned freelance and may have them in his sights. Along with the expected double helping of period detail, there's more romance for Falco, as one of his trips brings him up against his imperious, unapproachable love, Helena Justina, whose ex-husband, though dead, plays just as big a role in this conspiracy as he did in the last one. Less mystery than knockabout adventure with a persistently anachronistic flair. That Falco, he's some guy.
