This is by the author of Birds Against Men (Viking), and is a leisurely, descriptive travelogue, tracing a journey through the Peten region partly in Guatemala, partly in Yucatan, visiting the ruins of the Mayan civilization. Halle is both archaeologist and ornithologist. His book is largely aesthetic, he pictorializes in words the jungle, the birds, the insects, the ruins. This for the meditative armchair traveler, not for the adventure market. He and his companion proceed calmly and appreciatively along, adventureless, talking with natives, savoring now one hobby, now another. Rather restricted but discriminating market.
