What a man! Every book reveals another panel of his being; every book delights, persuades, compels even reluctant admirers. This is yet a different Bemelmans. First the child, living an enchanted innocence on the shores of the Traunsee in Austria, in a period when — says he- every child is an artist at heart. Then an interlude, quickly bypassed, which has found expression in some earlier books of his war with the USA, and his painting with a purpose. And then this new life- begun in 1953 in Paris. For the most part, this book tells the story of the house on the Ile de la Cite, of his friend the professor, who had thrown everything out the window and become a clochard, and of the plans for rebuilding the house that became too grandiose until Bemelmans turned his back on it all. And then- in a glasshouse belonging to an old tavern he began a new life in art- oils this time. And his text is illustrated with 34 pages in full color- from oils and gouaches- and 28 in black and white...But don't overlook the text. We've not seen the pictures, but the text is another Must for the Bemelmans' fans.?
