Small Beer was published in August 1939. This belongs in the same category, with greater concentration of background, (Ecuador), but with equal humor, perception, originality. A book of contradictions, from the incredible filth of Quito to unexpected niceties among the headhunters. He shares his visual impressions, he makes one feel as if one had been there too. And throughout, the human touches give it inimitable charm. Now and again, a serious undertone is sensed, as he reveals the infiltration of the Nazi propaganda, even among the refugees.
