..... intrudes on a marriage, during a rather disconsolate time when professor Courtney Bowen- having been cased out of his job-takes his wife Emily and his two daughters for a year in the Haute Savoie. Courtney's withdrawal makes Emily even more susceptible to the love offered by Abe Fielding, an old friend, but a sense of probity- rather than prudery- prevents her from accepting Abe on any basis. And along with Courtney's dispirited retreat, there is her daughter Virginia's unhappy awareness of her parent's situation, and the misguided gesture of a friend which returns Emily to Courtney- although knowing that she will also always love Abe.... A convincing story of mixed loyalties and divided affections, sympathetically differentiated and domesticated for women. The Rose Franken audience should be just about right.
