ONLY ONE NEIGHBORHOOD

Diversity is at the forefront of this description of the many varieties present within a single bustling neighborhood. “There may be only one bakery, but there are many kinds of bread,” the story begins, accompanied by an illustration showing the different types of bread contained within the store. Garrison depicts shops that sell toys, pizza, vegetables, shoes, hardware, musical instruments and flowers, as well as a delicatessen, a firehouse, an ice-cream truck and eventually a school (“There may be only one school, but there are many children”). The straightforward, repetitive text then widens to explain that there are many neighborhoods in a city, many cities in a country and many countries in a world, but “only one wish: PEACE.” Unique and intricate intaglio collagraphs show the colorful neighborhood teeming with people, shops and tempting objects for sale, and depict the plethora of differences—and similarities—present. A nice choice for showing categories, variety and different stores, as well as a portion of what makes up a neighborhood. (Picture book. 4-6)
